AN ISLAND THANKSGIVING

Holiday traditions are an important part of our family life. One of our traditions over the Thanksgiving holiday is adventuring to the San Juan Islands of Washington State. Our destination? West Beach Resort on Orcas Island.

We arrive at the Anacortes Ferry Landing just as the sun begins to rise. We are serious early birds this morning and our wait time in line is minimal before our ferry arrives.   While we wait, we take our pup Oliver for a walk and chat with other people who too are waiting for the ferry. It’s a beautiful morning and we are so excited to be on this trip.

LOVELY LEAVENWORTH IN WASHINGTON STATE

It really has been forever and a day since we’ve made the trip to Leavenworth here in Washington State. The last time we visited was in winter, years ago, so to be able to experience summer here was exciting for us.

We arrived at the Thousand Trails campground in Leavenworth and were directed to our site, located right on the edge of a darling little lake. Tall, towering pines surrounded our site and at once I felt at peace.

Here is the view from the inside of our trailer looking out – I’m sorry we are not there right now. What a beautiful spot it was.

THE NORTHWESTERN-MOST POINT OF THE CONTIGUOUS USA

It’s five o’clock on a Friday before a long four day weekend and I’m clocking out.  “Have a great road trip, Monica!” my colleagues tell me as I happily walk towards the front door with a spring in my step and a grin on my face. They have witnessed countless times my cocoon to butterfly-like transformation when I turn from a nine-to-five workaholic into a weekend RVing warrior.

This weekend, I’m packing up the family and escaping my nine-to-five with a well-deserved trip with our travel trailer. We’re heading to the northwestern-most point of the contiguous USA. Our first stop on the way is the quaint Victorian town of Port Townsend with a perfect RV site at the Point Hudson Marina & RV Park.

IDEAL WEEKEND RV GETAWAYS IN WASHINGTON STATE

I LOVE Washington. And as a writer, I naturally love helping others learn about new places to explore in Washington. So grab the family, pack the RV and check out four of my favorite locations for a fun-packed RV getaway weekend.

1. Olympic Peninsula

The Olympic Peninsula is unique from the rest of the state. I truly could RV here all summer and never get bored.

Hurricane Ridge – From Port Angeles, a 17 mile drive elevates you to the mountain tops of the Olympic Mountains. Enjoy spectacular views of snow capped mountains and of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Plenty of hiking available for all endurance levels including many kid-friendly trails.

Marymere Falls – Want to hike to a waterfall? Get up close with a gentle waterfall cascading 90 feet into a small pool. A kid-friendly one mile trail leads you through the forest and over a log bridge. The steepest part of the trail lies near the end as you approach the waterfall.
